RADx® Tech

The RADx® Tech program is a component of the overarching RADx Initiative at NIH to speed innovation in the development, commercialization, and implementation of technologies for COVID-19 testing. RADx Tech for COVID-19 was designed to compress the customary technology development timeline from years down to just months. This was accomplished by employing, in parallel, expert teams to address technical, regulatory, clinical, and commercialization requirements. Launched on April 29, 2020, the RADx Tech programs were able to validate, de-risk, scale up, manufacture, and deploy novel tests through a seamless pipeline. In addition, the Independent Test Assessment Program (ITAP) in collaboration with the FDA helped to accelerate authorization of tests from outside the U.S. and rapidly increase testing capacity during the Omicron variant surge and supported development of multiplex tests to detect COVID-19 and flu.
These programs increased testing capacity in the U.S. by billions. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, NIBIB continues to support projects to fill unmet needs in diagnostic testing.
Learn how these programs are now being leveraged to meet the needs of health challenges beyond the COVID-19 pandemic on the RADx Innovation Funnel page.
